So, here’s a picture of the new Justice League. Overall, I’m pleased, but I couldn’t help and make a few tweaks to some of the costumes. Click on the picture to make it bigger and it will move between the official version and my version.
Superman - Added some yellow piping to the top of the belt.
Batman - Made his belt black/gray. No idea why they kept it yellow.
Wonder Woman - Made the silvery bits gold. I like yellow on Wonder Woman and, besides, it matches her lasso.
Flash - I always thought the Flash should wear some kind of eye protection. If you look up Speed Skaters they wear a suit similar to the Flash’s and usually have on sunglasses. This poorly painted take is supposed to look like sunglasses that tie into his ear ‘wings.’
Green Lantern & Aquaman - I didn’t change a thing. They look good to me. If anything, I’d give GL more light constructs as part of his costume.
Cyborg - I like his new look. It’s silver and not white (which always bothered me) and he looks like a tank! I imagine bits and pieces can be removed/added depending on the adventure. It would be nice to see a ‘civilian’ version of Cyborg at some point.
Last week DC Comics announced that they are going to relaunch their line of superhero comics with all new number one issues. Along with this, there is also talk of a reboot or refresh of the actual universe to make it more reader friendly. DC also plans on releasing all comics digitally the same day they are available in print.
Wow! That’s a lot of changes!
The renumbering of the issues doesn’t bother me at all. Comics have been launched and relauched so many times, that the number (unless it’s #1) doesn’t matter at all. It’s a shame that Detective Comics, Batman, Action Comics and Superman will lose their large numbers, but, really, does it really matter? Going forward, it’s all about the current issue and or the current run of the book. Heck, DC could relauch all their books every September (and maybe they should) - Anything to get new readers to jump on board. Plus, with digital a reality, back issues are a thing of the past. Everything is TODAY!
As a long time fan of the DC Universe, the refresh of the universe has me a bit concerned. Stories are stories and that’s all they are, but, in a shared universe, it’s fun to read along and see everything built up into something greater. Will my favorite stories still matter? Did they still happen? I can understand some of the fans worrying about this stuff… but then I remembered: I was around for the first Crisis. I made it through Zero Hour. The other Crises also came and went. I’ll survive this and so will my favorite characters. Sure, they might act or look a little different, but they are still the characters I love. I’ll continue to enjoy their adventures and, who knows, maybe something exciting will happen…
On to digital day and day. This is wonderful! I’m happy DC put on the big-boy pants and went all out for digital comics. This, more than anything else, will bring in new readers. It just takes the click of your mouse or the flick of your finger and you have comics to read. This is HUGE!
As for the pricing… $2.99 is a lot to ask for a digital comic. A month later they will drop down to $1.99, but, to me, that’s still a lot to ask. For me, 99 cents is the sweet spot. As others have said, it becomes the ‘invisible’ price. When I download songs or apps, I don’t flinch at the 99 cent price point. Bump it up to $1.29 and suddenly I’m aware of it. Jacking it up to $2 or $3 and I actually stop and think about it. I’m sure this wasn’t just a random decision… DC has to placate Comic Book store owners, people that have keep them in business all these years. Sadly, that avenue, or channel, is coming to an end. I hope DC hasn’t drop the ball by overpricing themselves in the digital world.
Overall, this is an exciting time to be a comic book fan and an even more exciting time to be a fan of DC Comics! I look forward to the future!
Over the next few days I hope to use this blog to offer my comments on the newly announced DC books…
There is nothing to fear when C3PO and R2-D2 respond to the Rebel-Signal. Adam Carlson created this high flying Star Wars / Batman piece for Draw2d2.
I love this on so many levels.
Though Bruce is still Sad Bats over his parent’s death even in his new #1, Babs couldn’t be happier about getting her walk on.
I love the character of Oracle, but this picture just makes me smile.
